Here being my first proverb (and first ever) post, let me give you the rationale behind posting proverbs. You like to read, yes? If you do, then you'll know that one out of the 300+ pages of a book is the chance that you will encounter proverbs or idioms and not everything you will understand. Realizing this, I became interested with them and it made a hobby out of me to always look for its meaning.
According to wikianswers (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_'brevity_is_the_soul_of_wit'_mean), the proverb means that articulate and intelligent communication (speech and writing) should use few and wisely chosen words. It is best associated with the play 'Hamlet,' by William Shakespeare.
Therefore, Brevity is the soul of the wit means it will take few words that are chosen wisely to explain things and I agree. You may give lengthy speeches but if you cannot even drive a point then your speech did not serve its purpose well. Although sometimes it may require a lot of talking, it is now in your discretion how and what words to choose.
Be "Laconic"1 and save yourself more room for errors. :)
